About Us:

The Uniting Church in Australia (the Church) is a large, uniquely Australian Christian denomination in Australia with heritage from historical reformed evangelical denominations. In Queensland, the Uniting Church has around 250 congregations and has early childhood, schools, colleges and large community services (such as UnitingCare Queensland – BlueCare, Lifeline, Wesley Hospital and Wesley Mission Queensland).

Position purpose:

Reporting to the Executive Director – Secretariat, the purpose of this role is to oversee the Church in Queensland’s brand, communications, and external relations strategies and efforts. This involves leading a team of Communication and Events specialists and developing and implementing brand, marketing and communication strategies, managing relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring the Church and its entities’ positive reputation and engagement.

The position provides strategic support to the Executive Director – Secretariat and Synod Leadership Team, including the General Secretary and Moderator, to deliver high quality strategic and operational leadership in the areas of brand, marketing, communications, digital channels, content, events and external relations advice, practice, systems and frameworks. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the Brand, Communications and External Relations function within the Synod office to ensure that the strategies and operational activities meet both the current and future requirements for the Synod office and support identified in the FY25-28 Strategy.
  • Design and deliver the brand voice and communications strategy for the Uniting Church in Australia (Qld), ensuring all activities across marketing, advocacy, communication, events and fundraising align to the brand and support its development and growth.
  • Lead the culture and development of your team to high performance outcomes including day to day coaching, strategic and operational direction, clear task assignment, oversight of work plans, support and performance conversations and facilitate professional development.
  • Be the subject matter expert and provide timely and relevant advice to the Moderator, General Secretary and Executive Directors on all matters of brand and reputation management, crisis communications, media engagement, government relations and ensure alignment with related leaders in other Uniting Church in Australia Synods and agencies on reputational matters.
  • Proactively contribute to operational planning and decision-making processes with high quality advice to ensure Brand, Marketing, Communications, Digital and External Relations policies and plans achieve strategic and operational outcomes.
  • Provide oversight of Communications, Marketing, Events and External Relations budgets, identifying efficiencies across the Synod office.
  • Provide high quality, reliable, well evidenced and solution orientated business partnering, advisory and support services
  • Develop brand, communication and customer insights and effectiveness measures to support continuous improvement decisions and determine impact in the priority areas of the strategic plan.
  • Model the values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod in day to day work including in interactions with managers, lay staff, ministry agents, clients and stakeholders.
  • Identify and develop strategies to provide internal and external client focused customer service including identifying improvements to policy, process and the work environment.

  • Strategic and capability development – advancing business excellence in the Brand, Communication and external relations functional areas.
  • Operational service delivery - Implement operational plan initiatives to achieve targeted outcomes within quality levels, budget and timeframes
  • Financial management - manage the cost centre budget to target
  • Team leadership - demonstrate leadership capabilities resulting in a highly engaged and performing team
  • Stakeholder engagement – high levels of stakeholder trust, commitment and satisfaction
  • Risk & Compliance - ensure that sufficient risk management and controls are in place to manage risks and compliance obligations.

Experience & Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Post graduate qualifications in a relevant field an advantage.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, Marketing, Arts/Communications, Journalism, People & Culture, Psychology or similar.

Experience and skills:

  • A commitment to, and understanding of, the ethos of the Uniting Church in Australia (for a fuller understanding of the ethos of the church, refer to The Basis of Union).
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging, influencing and collaborating with stakeholders at all levels including Governing Bodies, Executive Leadership Teams, operational and functional team members across an organisation in other specialist teams, External community groups, peak bodies and customer groups.
  • Demonstrated substantial experience in the management and team leadership of a Brand, Communications, Marketing, External Affairs and/or Partnerships function in a complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing a broad range of Brand, Communications, Marketing, External Affairs strategies, programs, policies and operational processes to support the strategic objectives of the organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in building client focused service and relationship teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and recommend new business ideas and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of frameworks and applications that support a Brand, Communications, Marketing, External Affairs function.
  • Commitment to working within the purpose and values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod and adhering to the policies, organisational requirements and processes.
