POSITION DESCRIPTION – VOLUNTEER HONORARY TREASURER

About Zambia’s Child

Zambia’s Child (ZC) is a non-denominational organisation based in St Ives, NSW. The mission of ZC is to help alleviate poverty in Zambia, primarily through quality education. ZC has sponsorship programs for more than 400 primary and secondary school students in Chingola, a large town in the Copperbelt Province. ZC currently has 53 sponsored staff including executive staff, student welfare staff, teachers (and teacher aides), chaplain, security and maintenance staff, agriculturalists and chefs.

In 2013 ZC acquired 2.5 hectares of land to build the Ipalo Christian School on the outskirts of Chingola.

Stage 1 construction was completed in September 2015 and further stages were completed with Stage 6 completed in December 2022. A further 3 hectares of adjacent land have been acquired for agricultural purposes. In 2023 a Boarding House for 24 girls and 2 matrons was opened and we are planning for next year to open another wing for 24 boys and 3 matron/patrons.

All fundraising and administrative activities are coordinated from the St Ives office. All work done in Australia for ZC is conducted by volunteers in order that the funds raised can be devoted to the children’s programs in Zambia.

The Role

ZC is seeking a qualified accountant to take on the role of Treasurer for Zambia’s Child in Sydney. The broad functions of the role include:

  • Financial accounting for three entities:

    • ZC Zambia
  • Management reporting – budgeting, consolidations, analysis and reporting to the Australian Committee
  • Statutory reporting – ZC Australia and ZC Zambia
  • Cashflow management
  • Financial analysis and support

Quarterly reporting of Boarding House operating costs to Corporate Sponsor.

The Treasurer is supported by a qualified accountant who handles the bookkeeping functions and management accounts and who can also provide training in the accounting systems.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate is:

  • an active Christian involved in their Church and a qualified accountant
  • experienced with Quickbooks, Xero or other cloud-based accounting system
  • proficient with Excel

Full training can be provided.

General Responsibilities of a Committee Member

  • Attending monthly Sub-Committee and Committee meetings as a full committee member and presenting and commenting on Financial Reports. Sub-Committee and Committee meetings are held online and occasionally in person at the St Ives Office.
  • Being prepared to sign the Zambia’s Child Basis of Belief and become an Association Member of Zambia’s Child by paying a $10 joining fee and $10 per annum for member fees.

Zambian Connection

Several of our Committee Members have travelled to visit the ministry in northern Zambia and to meet the people on the ground. Although it is not a prerequisite for the role, we do find that people coming home from such visits find a new vigour and vision for the ministry.

Maintain a relationship with the local Zambian Accounting Staff via Zoom etc.
